About

John SeegersJohn Seegers built Optician Works to teach those wanting a career as a licensed optician or non-licensed optical dispenser. After many years as an optical professional, he saw the need for a site like this and saw an opportunity to pass on his knowledge. As a hands-on, licensed optician, he wanted a site to help aspiring opticians and optical dispensers learn.

OpticianWorks.com was launched in August of 2008.

John Seegers is a Virginia state licensed optician with over eighteen years of hands-on optical experience.

He is American Board of Opticianry (ABO) certified.

Mr. Seegers has:

An Associate of Applied Science degree from J Sargeant Reynolds Community College, Richmond, Virginia.

A Bachelor of Independent Study degree in Adult Education from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia.

A Master of Education degree in Adult Education from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia.

His Master’s thesis was part of an international, cooperative study in business relations with a school in Oradea, Romania.

He has taught optical dispensing, optical laboratory finishing theory and laboratory clinical for the J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College Opticianry program.

He has taught adult and continuing education courses for pre-GED for Chesterfield County, Virginia.

He has been an optician at two busy, high-end optometric practices, and formerly worked as a manager for a large mall-based retail optical chain.

He is also a contributing writer for Vision Care Product News, with over forty published works, including those for ABO CE credits.

When not working as an optician or on OpticianWorks.com he can usually be found cycling, running, rock climbing, kayaking or hiking the mountains of CO, WY and ID.

John comes from a unique background. His past jobs include: Federal Express Courier, chemical salesman, hazardous waste management, furniture mover, landscaper, warehouse worker and sand-blaster. He was the Education Coordinator  for The READ Center, an adult literacy program in Richmond, VA.

John is a volunteer mentor at a local elementary school and is also a volunteer with The Friends of Pocahontas State Park where he helps build and maintain the mountain bike trails.

Born and raised in New Jersey, he has also lived in Maine and now here in Virginia.
