My favorite tool, by far, is a Numont pliers. To me it is a must to have around for adjustment of metal and rimless frames. I great tool for holding the frame or just giving it leverage and support to bend endpieces and temples. I've seen too many frames that are weakened or broke without using this pliers. I always teach new opticians how to use 2 pliers when adjusting endpieces. Also, PD ruler is in"dispensable".

I became an optician in the Navy 18 years ago and worked in a fabrication factory. When i first started working on the floor I was in mounting and one of the guys there asked me to help him with some metal frames he was having and issue with. He pulled them out of the hot box and asked me to take out the screw. As soon as he put it in my hand i noticed it was hot, but i kep holding on to them and got the screw out – I handed back the frame and the screw and told him “I fixed the frames for you – you might want to replace the nose pads though, because I think these melted!” His face was priceless because he thought I was going to jump up from the heat of the frames. I was lucky to have thick skinned hands AND that they never tried to mess with me again!

On another note, I’m a HS teacher now and we got grant funds to buy lab equipment to teach urban kids fabrication skills, so you KONW we need equipment!

Happy Holidays to all...
Being an optician is very fulfilling. We see patients from 6 months and up, and I can not express the feeling when a patient puts on a pair of glasses for the first time, and is actually able to see clearly. It is amazing that the patient thinks that they are seeing to their full ability, when they are actually not because they just don't know any better. It is a wonderful feeling knowing that we have helped them with what a lot of us take for granted, the ability to see.

Kathy,

I'll post your questions but...
I doubt that anyone using this site will be able to help you.
I really don't do anything with contact lenses.
There are some contact lens study guides and textbooks out there.

You might have much better luck over at OptiBoard.

I am not aware of ANSI standards for contacts.
