Hear what others have to say about Optician Works and its eye wear and eye care products resources for opticians or ophthalmic staff, or textbook and video lessons for those aspiring to be opticians or non-licensed optical dispensing professionals, and optical dispensers or ophthalmic dispensers who want to simply “brush up” on their skills.

The students in my program thoroughly enjoy the content provided by your website.  The content of the website is comprehensive and truly informative to not only future opticians, but those who need to brush up on skills that are rarely used.  I would recommend this website as a reference for any Optician or future Optician seeking to expand and perfect their knowledge.

To use the lingo I see on-line, ECP (Eye Care Providers) can all benefit from this website, and I will recommend its use for Doctor’s in training also.

Thank you for your very helpful website. I am an optometrist in Vancouver, BC Canada. I have my own business and worked with an excellent optician who worked with me for 17 years. Just her and me and then she retired on me at age 60 a few years ago. I have had to train myself in dispensing glasses as I have not been able to find a proficient optician. Went through a few and caused many problems. I really appreciate the information collated all in one place on your website. I learned about dispensing 20 years ago. Your information is relevant, concise, accurate, and well written. I will recommend your website to many of my colleagues, opticians and optometrists. Thank you so much. This is the best I have seen. Keep up the great work you are doing. I like the way you have updated the site.

~Sincerely, DC

Hello, John. Bless you for this resource! I was an Optician 20 years ago and decided two months ago to go back to it. The unemployment economy has made me realize that this is a need that will always be there: good vision. Thank you for allowing me to study for free. You are saving my life.
~CM

Hey, great website! Everyone should visit the site before going to the Optometrist or Optician! I like the section on repair & adjustment, I hate going to someone for a simple fix that I can do myself. Now I can do it correctly :) I’ve bookmarked you in case I need future help.
~BK

Great site. I’ll be suggesting it for reference reading for our Optical Dispensing students. Thanks for the resource.

I want to become an Optician, can you please point me in the right direction? I work for an optical store in Miami, Florida. Thank you for your wonderful website. It’s by far the best Optical Website I’ve ever see. I saw your ad in 20/20 Magazine. Keep up the good work!
~LA

I have been an optician for 22 years. I just found your site by accident. I think you have done a great job, and I will be telling all my friends in the field about it!

I am new to the field of optometry. I have been working as an optician asst. for about 7 months and edging lenses for about 5 months. I am going to take the ABO this month and I came across your site. It has been great for filling in some of the gaps in understanding I was having with the study material from the optical training institute. Your site is well put together easy to read and understand. I cannot thank you enough for putting it together.

~SG

I’m not in the optical industry, but I do wear glasses and contacts. I wanted to buy corrective swim goggles, and needed to convert my prescription to a spherical equivalent. I found your website well organized, descriptive, and very informative. I got my science lesson for the night, and I’ll be back.

Hi, I’m a second year student at DTCC and have really been enjoying your site. The Modules section to the side has been especially helpful. I’ve been getting the calculations “right” in theory classes at times without real understanding of what the math means. For instance, I didn’t fully understand how the axis translates to the shape of the cornea itself. It’s a sliced football! That’s the exact analogy Ellen Stoner used in her Optical Theory Tutorial, but I didn’t understand it when I read it the first time. As you wrote, understanding shape concepts will be most important for contact lens. This is great stuff and I’ll be reading every Module. Thank for taking the time to write it.

Greetings…
On Tuesday I start my new position as an Optical Technician. I should say “old” position. It was more than 30 years ago that I entered in to a 3 year apprenticeship to be a dispensing Optician. While I thoroughly enjoyed the work…life had other plans and after 2 and a half years I went in another direction. I’m thrilled to be re-entering the field and while I sill retain some basics…I have lots to learn….and it’s exciting. I stumbled upon your website by accident….a wonderful accident at that. I will be consuming each Module throughout the weekend and beyond!
Wish me luck…and thank you for a tremendous resource.

I am working as an optician in Texas. Years ago I started at Indiana University in the optometric technician program, later became a teacher and now work as an optician studying to get the ABO exam, so I can be a better optician, move up and also get a raise.

I am 25 year old. I am working in the optical shop. Most of our clients are tourists from Europe. I am from Thailand and I would like to be a good Optician. I like your web page very much. That help me a lot to use lensometer. If you have more information, i will be very glad to receive it by your email.
Thank you very much.
Best regards

I stumbled across your site this morning when looking for an answer to a day-off question. Great site that I will bookmark both at home and at work!

Hello there,
I am starting a new job tomorrow as an ophthalmic dispenser and have been away from the industry for about a year. I really needed to quickly brush up on everything and unable to find a suitable and affordable textbook, I luckily found your website after carefully “Googling”. Thank you so much for the thorough, comprehensible and easily accessible guide. I simply wanted to make myself feel more confident starting my first day, and you have helped single handedly do that. So thank you!
~SR

Dear Mr. John,
I visited your site and found the information very helpful as I am currently teaching a set of new comers with little optical background, the art of opticianry. The information in your site has immensely helped us. Whatever doubts and information we come across we will definitely share it with you.
Keep doing the good things.

~L

Doug, a big THANK YOU for all your work on opticianworks.com! I will be taking the ABO exam in November and your site is a big help, as I am pretty much teaching myself. I love the videos since I am a visual learner–no pun intended.
~K

Just came across your web site. I know how much work it is to put something like this out and want you to know I think it’s great. I too have been doing this for 25 years in RI.
~RLB

I have been getting information and learning from your webpage..!! It is very useful and clear. Thanks for that.
~D

Fezz at optiboards recommended your site for training of my non optical experienced co workers! I wanted to let you know that after reviewing it and other sites I found yours to be the best thought out, easiest to understand site out there. Being an experienced optician I knew that my “easy to understand” is not the same as my co-workers, so I had one of them look it over today and she said it was much better than what I had already had them using. (Sutherlin Opticals Handbook for Opticians and “the opticians handbook”). Also, I love the idea of “Erins World” Frames! So thank you for putting together such a well thought out and easy to understand free resource!
~CR

Dear John,
I found your opticianworks.com link and was delighted with the quality and comprehensiveness of the material you have presented. After completing an A.A.S. degree in Ophthalmic Dispensing in 1982 and passing NYS licensing exams, I practiced in the field for a while until I found myself in a position where it was preferred that I not ‘work outside the home.’ Unfortunately, I allowed my affiliations to lapse. I have recently and unexpectedly relocated to Clarksville, Tennesse where there are no independent opticians’ shops. If I am to pursue licensure in this state, I will need the review, and work experience to sharpen my skills. Your study materials and other continuing education coursework will be of great value. Thank you for the time and effort expended in producing opticianworks.com

Hi, I’m a Spanish optician, and I work at XXXX Lens Company since 4 years ago. This mail is only to congratulate you for your website. Lots of good information for people in the workshop or people who like optic science! Go on and thanks for your advices! Thanks a lot.

I’m a 3d graphics designer.
For many years I’ve wanted to design eyewear but haven’t had the skills & knowledge to do so…
Your site has been invaluable in attaining that knowledge. I’m now designing my first frame. With a little luck I’ll have my first prototype in a month or so. In essence, you helped me trying out a dream of mine.
I’ve now cut lenses with an optician friend and this week I’m meeting a manager of a glazing lab to discuss specifics to what works and not…
Many thanks for your excellent site!
Best regards,
~O

Just wanted to say, THANK YOU SO MUCH for putting together this resource. I can’t even begin to thank you enough, this is such a wonderful thing that you have done. Thanks again!
~AP

I love your website and I love to train. I recommend this site to all of my new opticians I have helped in the last 5 years. I just took a job where I am the only optician but I will continue to push advancement for all my younger optician friends. Thanks
